The battle of the Bulge archery point has been ongoing for many years. It is a heated battle between two opposing forces: the arrow’s velocity and the mat’s stopping power. As arrow speeds increased, so did the friction needed to bring this kinetic energy to an abrupt stop. The result of this friction is enough heat to melt the fibers or synthetic materials of the mat; it is just part of the laws of thermodynamics. Once the arrow stops, the heat dissipates, leaving the arrow shaft bonded to the mat.   So, how do you solve the heat problem… ah, there is the rub.

Two angles of attack were taken.   One was to lubricate the arrow, and the other was to design the bulge archery point to allow more time for the heat to dissipate before the molten mat would contact the shaft.
