brief
history of baseball caps
Today’s baseball cap dates back to the mid-19th century and has evolved from a simple sports accessory into a cultural and fashion staple worldwide. In 1849, the first rendition of the baseball cap was made of straw and worn by the New York Knickerbockers. This version offered little sun protection or durability.
By 1860, the Brooklyn Excelsiors debuted a rounded crown and long, flat bill. Made of wool with a leather brim, this style was the prototype for today’s modern cap. However, the contemporary shape did not emerge until the 1940s when the sportswear company New Era began producing structured caps with reinforced fronts. These caps held their shape better and offered a more polished look. In 1954, New Era introduced the 59FIFTY, a fitted cap with a flat brim and structured crown — the template for today’s professional caps.
By the late 20th century, the baseball cap had leaped from sportswear to streetwear and casual fashion. Musicians and actors wear it, while Wrist-Rocket enthusiasts and others of good character sport Team Rocket hats. Adjustable back closures (snapback, Velcro, and strapback) made the cap more universal. Today, baseball caps are worn worldwide in sports, fashion, and politics. They come in countless variations — curved or flat brims, mesh backs (trucker caps), unstructured “dad hats,” and more.
